William O. Douglas Wilderness offers a remote and rugged landscape ideal for backpacking, hiking, and camping amid old-growth forests and alpine terrain within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
The William O. Douglas Wilderness, established in 1984 and named after Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, spans over 169,000 acres of protected wilderness in eastern Washington state. Located within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, this wilderness area features diverse landscapes from dense old-growth forests dominated by Douglas fir, western red cedar, and ponderosa pine, to high-elevation ridges and meadows carved by glaciers. Elevations range from approximately 1,600 feet to over 6,500 feet, offering varied terrain and distinct habitats. The area is noted for its rugged ridgelines, deep river valleys including the eastern stretches of the Yakima River, and several remote alpine lakes. Ecologically, it supports populations of black bears, mule deer, elk, and numerous bird species. The wilderness provides excellent outdoor recreation opportunities including backpacking, day hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, and fishing. Trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail traverse the area, presenting sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains. Key landmarks include the imposing Yakima River canyon and the North and Middle Peaks. Visitors appreciate the sense of solitude and pristine environments here, with fewer crowds compared to other Cascade wildernesses. The wilderness also serves as an important refuge for native flora and fauna as well as critical watershed protection. Access points are generally reached via forest roads from nearby towns offering trailheads connected to a network of footpaths and old logging roads. This wilderness is prized for adventurous outdoor enthusiasts seeking rugged, less developed trails and backcountry camping.
